Program Director, Blue Ridge AHEC
Carmen is the Assistant Director of Community Health Education at James Madison University. She oversees various programs at the Institute for Innovation in Health and Human Services to include the AHEC Scholars Program; the Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center; the Community Health Interpreting, Testing, and Training Service; the Futuro Latino Coalition; and the Promotores de Salud Program. She has worked in a variety of diverse settings such as community clinics, hospitals, universities, public schools, and private companies.
Carmen has provided services to multicultural communities in dietetics and nutrition, health promotion and wellness, diabetes and heart disease prevention education and community engagement. She received a Dietetics degree at New Mexico State University and a Master’s in Public Health from San Diego State University. She is also a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
Community Health Interpreting, Testing & Training Service (CHITTS)
Director of Operations
April is the Director of Operations for the Community Health Interpreting, Testing and Training Service (CHITTS). April worked with CHITTS as a Program Specialist for almost 4 years before moving into the Director of Operations position in October 2019. She received her Bachelor of Science in Leadership & Organizational Management from Eastern Mennonite University.
Before coming to JMU, April began her career as a Radiologic Technologist, spending 14 years working in various healthcare settings. She received her A.A. & S. from Blue Ridge Community College and a Certificate in Radiography from Rockingham Memorial Hospital School of Radiologic Technology. Her desire to help the community led her from healthcare to focusing on the needs of underserved populations in the area.
Marcia is the Administrative Coordinator for CHITTS. She has been in this position since July 2003. She oversees all invoicing for CHITTS-related services and interpreter payroll. Prior to her employment with CHITTS, she worked for the James Madison University Office of Sponsored Programs, CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union and First American Bank of Virginia. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts from the State University College of New York at New Paltz.
Futuro Latino (FLC)
Onesimo Baltazar Corona
Onesimo Baltazar Corona is the Futuro Latino Coalition Coordinator. In this role, he supports efforts to improve Latino youth's health and well-being by preventing the use and misuse of alcohol and drugs, educating the community, and seeking out funding sources.
He has collaborated with several community projects over the last two years, making a positive impact in the Hispanic community. He is an active leader and a member of various community organizations.
Onesimo is from Hidalgo, Mexico. He has a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from “Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo” and a Master’s in Public Administration from Mexico. He has worked for both private and public organizations in accounting and finance roles.
Onesimo is friendly, creative, responsible, detail-oriented, and resourceful. He lives in Harrisonburg with his wife and his two daughters. Dedicating quality time to his wife and daughters is the most valuable activity for him. He also enjoys spending time with his friends, traveling, and taking professional pictures.
